| 19 वीं सदी के उत्तरार्द्ध और 20 वीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभ में प्रख्यात बांग्ला साहित्यकार बंकिमचंद्र चैटर्जी, जिनका लिखा 'आनंदमठ' का गीत 'वन्दे मातरम्' आज भारत का राष्ट्र गीत है। नेताजी सुभाषचंद्र बोस जैसे नेता और गुरुदेव रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर जैसे महान रचनाकार से लेकर सैकड़ों स्वाधीनता के सिपाहियों का घर होने का गौरव प्राप्त है।
